‘Exciting’ is an understatement, I think.
The Kingfisher Oceanside Resort & Spa is undergoing a very extensive and revitalizing set of renovations, with the AQUA Bistro & Wine Bard and Ocean7 restaurant being the most recent amenities to undergo a transformation. With more improvements inside and out during 2016-2019, my colleague and I, David Bossom of Island Waterscape, are thrilled to be a part of the excitement in the air, or should I say, in the garden!
The Serenity Gardens expand on the Kingfisher’s own premise, of being “Nestled in a coastal forest on the eastern shore of Vancouver Island, the Kingfisher Oceanside Resort and Spa offers breathtaking ocean and mountain views.” The signature west coast experience embodied by the Kingfisher has inspired our design to draw out guests and incorporate their relaxation and enjoyment into the landscape itself.
Meandering streams weave through the space and between pathways, allowing guests to wander through the beloved and expanded mixed borders.
Intimate niche patios with gas fire-bowls tucked around waterfalls and ponds allow guests a quiet spot to retreat with a glass of wine and enjoy the evenings as the garden lights up softly around them.
A large pond in the lower end of the courtyard draws the eye and the wildlife. With rocky outcroppings and water falls this is the focal point of the whole space. A grassy stage berm allows entertainers or speakers to be heard from 360 degrees.
Lush textural plantings of colourful low shrubs and perennials aids in separating the niche patios and creating those private spaces. Plantings are chosen with a focus on providing four seasons of colour and structural interest. And never fear, for those that hold the Kingfisher dear to their hearts, the beloved existing garden beds are left mainly intact and expanded upon.
An inspiring project, with vision for the future.
